How To Create Heavenly Organic Bath Treats

By Louise Forrest

Who said that wonderfully relaxing baths had to be full of chemicals? Homemade bath products guarantee that you know the ingredients your bath products have in them and save you on cost.

Just remember that ingredients should all be organic to keep from inadvertently exposing yourself to unwanted chemical pesticides, fertilizers, and preservatives. Following are four decadent bath recipes you are sure to enjoy!

Relaxing Bubble Bath:

This recipe can be changed to suit your tastes or moods. Here we have used rose essential oil, but other essential oils (or a blend) may be used instead. For example, peppermint oil will invigorate you while the lavender tends to relax - just substitute your preferred oil in place of the rose oil in the recipe. Mix all ingredients and store in an easy pour container (a gallon jug is great). Pour a small amount in running bath water.

Ingredients

8 cups (1/2 gallon) distilled water
8 oz (2 bars) soap, grated moisturizer/softener that can be found in health food stores or on the internet)
3/4 cup liquid glycerin (moisturizer/softener that can be found in health food stores or on the internet)
1 1/2 teaspoons rose essential oil (essential oils can be found in health food stores and on the internet, just be sure that they are produced from organically produced base plants)

Super moisturizing Strawberry Delight:

This is a great summertime bath because strawberries are readily available. However, if you can get them in the winter, this bath is an awesome pick me up from the wintertime blues and dry skin. Between the castor oil and fresh cream, this bath is an excellent way to combat dry skin, so substitution of essential oils or frozen strawberries in place of fresh strawberries can be done if strawberries are not available.

Essential oils can be purchased at most heath food stores or on the internet, you just want to be sure that they are produced from organically grown base plants. If you choose to substitute essential oils for the strawberries, use the 2nd version of ingredients listed below.

Ingredients (1st version)

1 1/2 tablespoons castor oil

3/4 cup organic cream (heavy)

3/4 cup fresh organic strawberries

3 cups distilled water

Ingredients (2nd version)

1 1/2 tablespoons castor oil

1 1/4 cups organic cream (heavy)

1 teaspoon essential oil of your choice

3 1/2 cups distilled water

For either version, blend ingredients on high until smooth and creamy. Place 1/2 of the mixture in an airtight container and refrigerate (use within 1 week) and use the other 1/2 of the mixture immediately. All you have to do now is pour the creamy mixture into running bath water, stir a bit, and enjoy!

Soothing Lavender Bath:

This is a great bath for any season because of its skin soothing qualities from the baking soda and oat flour ingredients. Both of these are known for helping calm itch, therefore soothing irritated skin. In summer, this means relief from insect bites and allergies, in the winter it means relief from dry, winter skin. This bath is also helpful for soothing chicken pox and measles. This bath is easily used when stored in an airtight cereal container.

Ingredients

1 cup baking soda

1 1/2 cups organic lavender, dried and crushed (found in health food stores or on the internet)

3 cups organic oat flour ((found in health food stores)

Mix ingredients in a large bowl until all ingredients are thoroughly dispersed and store mixture in airtight cereal container. Use 1/2 to 1 cup in bathwater, depending on bathtub size. For added relaxation, add 1 teaspoon lavender essential oil to your bath along with this mixture.

Vanilla Delight Bath Cookies:
These will smell terrific and the ingredients are not harmful, but you will not want to eat them, trust us on this one! Dissolve 2 or 3 of them in your bath water for a delightfully relaxing experience.

Ingredients

1 cup baking soda

1 1/4 cup cornstarch

4 large eggs

4 cups sea salt (finely ground)

1 1/2 teaspoons pure organic vanilla extract

3 tablespoons organic vegetable oil

2 teaspoons organic vitamin E oil

You will be making these like most cookies. Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Mix all ingredients, forming a very stiff dough. Rolls into 1 inch balls and place on a cookie sheet about 2 inches apart. Bake until golden brown (about 10 or 12 minutes). Cool completely before removing from cookie sheet. Store your organic bath cookies in Mason Jars (canning jars).

You Can Make Aromatic Bath Salts!

By Christopher W Smith

People use aromatic bath salts for multiple reasons. Bath salts can help to relieve stress and increase energy as well as improve mood. Each of the many scents has a purpose. Aromatic bath salts are also an easy craft project for those of you who are creative, and they are even fun projects for those of us who aren't so creative. Aromatic bath salts are great to give as gifts or to display in your guest bathroom. If you do not want to make your own you can purchase them pre-made as well.

When making bath salts you need only a few ingredients; the salt and fragrance along with baking soda. For the salt you can use many different types, commonly used salts when making aromatic bath salts are Epsom Salt, Sea Salt or Rock Salt. The best types are the courser, large grained salts. Table salt is not ideal because of the additives but you can purchase and use non-iodized table salt if you wish.

For the fragrance, scented oils or herbs can be used. This is when it gets fun and tricky at the same time. If you are using essential or fragranced oils you need to be sure the ones you choose are for use in bath products. There are oils specifically made for craft projects that are not safe for use in the bath.

If you want to have an herbal bath you can layer the fresh herbs and salt in a glass jar and cover tightly with a plastic lid (or put plastic wrap over, then cover with the lid it if is metal). Allow this mixture to rest for two to three weeks for the salts to soak up the scents of the herbs then remove the herbs and you have aromatic bath salts that you can use to take a soothing herbal bath.

Most simple recipes on line have you add baking soda to the salts to treat the water and give you soft water to bathe in. The guidelines usually have you put the salt and baking soda in the tub as the water runs and then add your oils just before you get into the water. This does make a great aromatic bath but placing the salts into the tub instead of into a bottle makes it difficult to display or give as gifts. When using this type of recipe be careful, especially if you intend to bottle the product. It is possible to have a chemical reaction when baking soda is mixed with some ingredients and you don't want to be known as the one who gave away explosive bath salts.

Aromatic bath salts are easy to make but, as with most things, you have to be cautious. With any recipe you get for aromatic bath salts it is important to test the recipe before giving them away and do your homework before blindly mixing ingredients that have a potential to pose safety risks. Use sources that you know or that someone you know has used with good results. If you don't have any that fall into that category use sources that you trust.

Aromatic bath salts are a great way to relax, and they can be displayed in the bathroom without adding them to your bath and still be enjoyed. Use caution when using essential oils. It only takes a couple drops for a whole tub of water, and if you use too much it can cause skin irritation. The essential oils used in the bath salts will with time lose their aroma. Essential oils usually only last for 2 years, after that they expire and you will need a new bottle.

Goat Milk Soap Recipe - Easy And Fast!

By Al Bullington

Soap making is an easy and fun craft hobby. But soap making can be a great part-time business. Many folks pull in an extra thousand or two a month with a part-time venture.

What's the appeal of handcrafted soap? Commercial soaps are usually drying and many are actually synthetic detergents. Your kitchen crafted soap can work better. It has a special, moisturizing luxury feel. Plus you have the option of customizing it with different ingredients ... especially scents in literally infinite variety. This can be a goat milk soap recipe or any other kind of milk as well.

This gives you one of our proven recipes and the basic instructions to put it all together.

Our specialty is milk soap. We made over 30,000 bars of soap like this in our kitchen sink over a four-year period. We sold all that soap at craft shows and festivals and through our own catalog. Though you can make soap using water instead of milk, you will like the milk soap better ... guaranteed!!!

Lightly Lavender Goat Milk Soap Recipe

11.3 ounces (320 grams) Coconut Oil

11.7 ounces (330 grams) Palm Oil

15.5 ounces (440 grams) Olive Oil

3.9 ounces (110 grams) Almond Oil

6.1 ounces (175 grams) Sodium Hydroxide

15.5 ounces (440 grams) Whole Milk

2 1/3 Tablespoons Lavender Essential Oil

1 Tablespoon Almond Oil

Now for some "inside information". To make any soap, you mix fats and an alkali or lye. All soap is made that way. The cured product is harmless. You can brush your teeth with it. You can even eat it. It won't hurt you!

But the lye and the uncured soap mixture are very caustic. It will burn your skin. It will blind you if it gets in your eyes! You absolutely must wear goggles when you make soap and it's best to wear rubber gloves and long sleeves too.

Equipment You Will Need

2 Stainless Steel Pans

1 Plastic Pan

Rubber Spatula

Thermometer (90-200 degree F Range)

Scale For Weighing Material

Molds For Soap (Plastic Tub)

Hand Held Stick Blender (Optional)

Soap Making Step-by-Step

1. Weigh oils and combine in stainless steel pan.

2. Heat slowly until everything melts. Cool to about 110 degrees. Do not include the scent oil or the small amount of almond oil.

3. Weigh lye in a plastic container. Remember the gloves and goggles.

4. Weigh milk and pour into a separate stainless steel pan.

5. Put 2-3 inches of water in your sink and add ice cubes. Put your pan with milk into ice water.

6. Slowly pour the lye into the milk. Take twenty minutes to do this, stirring all the while. Monitor the milk temperature and keep it below 150 degrees so it does not burn. When all the lye is added, let the mixture cool until it is 110 degrees.

7. Add the lye/milk mixture to the oils, stirring while you do so; now stir the soap mixture until it begins to gel. It's time to stop stirring when a thin stream of soap drizzled on top of the soap
mixture lays on top. This is called tracing. If stirring by hand this may take 45 minutes. To speed things up the trick is to use your hand blender to stir the soap for 30 seconds, let it rest for a minute and repeat until it traces.

8. Add scent oils and the extra almond oil.

9. Pour into prepared molds. Let sit for 24 hours. Remove from molds. Cut into bars and set aside to cure for 4 weeks.

These are basic instructions. Lots of soap making books are out there, but many make it so complicated it's tough to get going. Even if you consult some of those books, return to these instructions for the basics. Try this recipe. You will love the results.

How To Create Your Own Soap Making Recipe

By Jennifer Christine

Once you’ve mastered the basics of soap making, it’s fun to create your own recipes.

First, you have to decide what method of soap making you’re going to make. Are you going to use the cold process method (with lye), the rebatched/handmilled method or the melt and pour method?

Next, what kind of soap do you want to make? For example, prettily molded hand soap or moisturizing soap to use in the bath or shower?

Are you going to superfat your soap? Superfatting is when you add additional fatty oils after saponification to make a richer, creamier soap. There are all kinds of different oils you can use in superfatting, including shea butter and cocoa butter.

What color do you want your soap? What do you want your soap to smell like? What shape and size mold do you want to use? These are important questions to consider.

Do you want to include additives such as oatmeal, flower petals or glitter?

Once you’ve carefully crafted your own recipe and written instructions, have all the ingredients and equipment necessary, it’s time to start making your soap.

Now don’t forget you have to allow time for the soap to set and cure. If you’re making cold process soap, this take two weeks. On the other hand, making soap using the melt and pour method only takes a few hours to set, even less if you put it in the refrigerator!

If you plan on giving your soap to friends and family, they’re sure to be impressed by the fact that you made the soap yourself, using your own recipe! If you know they like a specific scent, shapes or colors, you can tailor make the soap to their liking, eg, making lavender seashells for someone who likes seashells and lavender fragrance.

It’s really satisfying to make soap using your own recipe. Once you’ve mastered the art of soap making, or even enjoying the process of mastering it, you may find it hard to stop!

Homemade lye soap is not just for the older generation either, in fact younger craft enthusiasts are recognising the need to keep some of the old traditions, as well as finding new ideas for making homemade lye soap more attractive.

One of the great benefits of homemade lye soap is that it's completely natural and the only additional ingredients are whatever you decide to put in to it, so you don't need to worry about those nasty chemicals when your soap is homemade. Lye soap, without any added fragranced or perfumed oils, has been known to help ease skin problems such as eczema and psoriasis. A problem with commercially produced soaps is that the glycerin is removed, whereas with homemade lye soap the moisturising properties are retained.

Homemade lye soap is used for much more than our skin. Different ways of mixing the ingredients makes the lye soap useful for removing fabric stains, cleaning furniture, floors and kitchen surfaces, and even as fish bait! Some people have also found that it can have a soothing effect on insect bites and can help to reduce dandruff.

Making homemade lye soap is not difficult, and done properly it can be a fun way to create your own soap products and save money at the same time. Start with a basic recipe and once you're feeling a bit more confident you can add in different oils and colors to give your homemade lye soap a prettier appearance. Most of the ingredients needed for making homemade lye soap can be found in your local grocery store or supermarket.

Creating your own homemade lye soap recipes can be a great way of making unique gifts for your family and friends. It will cost you very little and your friends will love the personal touch of receiving a gift made with your very own hands. The more you practice and experiment with your homemade lye soap ideas, the more creative you can become and you can even start to think about selling your wonderful new homemade soap bars.

Many people in today's society are looking for natural products to use on in their homes, and what better place to start than with homemade lye soap!

Marie Ackland - Soap making was originally a hobby of mine that gave me great pleasure, theres something quite satisfying about creating from scratch a beautifully scented bar of soap.

It then turned into a full time passion, creating wonderful soap for family and friends to enjoy. When a friend surgested I take some along to a local craft fair, which I did and from that day on I never looked back. I now have a great soap business which makes a healthy profit and gives me great satisfaction.

So now 20 years on from my first batch I love to teach the art of soap making. It can be frustrating at first but if you learn the fundamentals and put into practice my methods you WILL have great soap every time.

Homemade Face Scrub

By Ian Pennington

Who says one need a fortune to get a smooth face? You don't even have to go to a derma to have that good-looking skin. You can make a really simple yet effective scrub. You can make a homemade face scrub that cost less yet would provide you same results. Caring for your skin need not be expensive. The ingredients needed to make a scrub can be even found in your own homes. Let me show you how.

One basic ingredient in making a homemade face scrub that can be found in your homes is brown sugar. A facial scrub that melts like sugar instead of using micro beads is much preferable for your skin. Micro beads can become stuck in your pores. The high blackstrap molasses in the sugar helps to exfoliate, like a chemical peel. If you have an oily skin, you may use genuine salt, baking soda or ground aspirin. If you have dry, sensitive skin, try cornmeal or oatmeal. Wet your face, but don't wash it yet. Add a little water to the sugar but not enough to melt it. Scrub your face gently, in wide, circular strokes using your fingertips. When the sugar melts and has worked well into your skin, simply let the past rest on your skin for about 10 minutes. You can use a toner if you wish. After that, moisturize.

Do you know that fruits can also be used as a homemade face scrub? Avocado can cleanse the skin and make it feel fresh and alive just right after you make the application. It's natural and very affordable. Here's what you will need to make this one-of-a-kind scrub. You will need 1 dried avocado pit, ½ of a banana, about 1 tablespoon of olive oil, plastic bag that can be sealed or tied and a hammer. Grind the dried avocado pit until the pieces are very fine. You need to use the plastic bag and hammering it to make it fine. Mix it with banana and olive oil, just enough to make the paste thick. Rub it gently over your face. Don't use too much pressure, as the avocado pit will naturally exfoliate. Rinse first with warm water then cold water to close the pores then you pat it dry with a towel.

Homemade Dandruff Cure

By Anne Cresacre

Dandruff is the most common problem affecting the scalp, but this doesn't make it any less frustrating, as anyone who has suffered from it will no doubt agree.

There are many anti-dandruff shampoos on the market today that can get rid of dandruff, however the large number of strong and toxic chemicals contained in them can often do more harm than good, especially if you have a sensitive scalp or are allergic to any of the ingredients. Things like Sodium Laureth Sulfate and Formaldehyde, strong degreasers and disinfectants respectively, are regularly added to most shampoos on the market.

You should try to buy a natural shampoo which will nourish, moisturize and condition your scalp, and then add natural oils like Lavender or Rosemary to the shampoo to give it an extra boost. Shampoos which contain tea tree oil can be effective at treating dandruff, particularly if the dandruff is accompanied by itching and irritation.

Here I'm going to show you a simple homemade dandruff cure that you can try yourself - not only is it 100% natural, but you'll also save some money too! :)

Fenugreek Seeds Homemade Dandruff Cure

Fenugreek seeds can be used as a simple homemade dandruff cure. Fenugreek (also known as Methi) is very popular in Indian cooking and the seeds can be purchased from most supermarkets and health stores these days. A 100 gram bag should cost you no more than $1.

  • Take 2 tablespoons of fenugreek seeds and soak overnight in water
  • In the morning grind the soft seeds into a fine paste
  • Apply this paste all over scalp and leave for half an hour
  • Rinse off thoroughly with soap nut solution
  • A teaspoon of lime juice on the last rinse will work wonders

Brushing your hair daily will help to disperse the dandruff and stimulate the circulation to your scalp. Regular massaging of the scalp before or after brushing can also stimulate the circulation and help to remove any flakiness caused by the dandruff.
